                    **** SndsInfo.TXT ***** (Sound Library)

The Kurzweil sound library disks contain various sounds (patches) from Kurzweil
1000 and 1200 series Expanders and Keyboards. Files for each basic type
Keyboard or Expander are included in separate directories. For instance,
the files in the SX directory are intended for the String Expander. The
intended Expander or Keyboard should be fairly obvious from the names.
Files with extension `MOM' are `Mac' Object Mover files. Files with extension
`KUR' are Kurle Editor Librarian format files. Kurle will load both the `MOM'
and `KUR' files. Files with extension `DIR' are ASCII text files. These
contain the directory of sounds in the `MOM' or `KUR' files with the same name.
They can not be loaded by KURLE. You may wish to print the files with
extension `DIR' as a directory for your sound library.

If you are using KURUTIL or KURLE from At Work Software, set the search
criteria in the `FILE GET' command to

     Drive:\Directory\*.*

and select the files with `MOM' or `KUR' extensions for loading. For instance,
if the sound library is in drive A and you wish to view the sounds for the
Horn Expander (HX), set the `FILE GET' criteria to A:\HX\*.*.

The sounds on this disk were provided by Young Chang America, Inc. and are
distributed free of charge by At Work Software.

Please note that even though we have supplied sounds from all of the Kurzweil
Expanders and Keyboards, many will seem to produce unexpected results or seem
to be "garbled". Here is why. The objects supplied are `program objects',
or `patches', NOT instrument samples. Program objects are only lists of
PARAMETERS that tell your Kurzweil how to play the INSTRUMENT SAMPLES resident
in an Expander or Keyboard. Different Expanders and Keyboards contain
different samples, so not all programs will make sense for your device. For
example, if you have a PX1000 or K1200, you will probably not have a trombone
sample. If you load a program for trombone from the programs intended for the
HX1000 series (Horn Expander) you will load the parameters that would instruct
the HX1000 how to `play' the trombone sample in the HX1000. However, you do
not have a trombone sample, and in fact may have a vibes sample in the location
pointed to by the program. This will produce a pretty funny sounding trombone!
NOTHING IS WRONG, you just don't have the intended Kurzweil device. Loading
the `unintended' programs will not hurt a thing, and you may even find some
magic new sound that will make a number one hit. Try different sound files with
each new program - using KURLE edit of course!

Another confusing area for many Kurzweil owners is the difference between a
program number (related to MIDI program or patch numbers) and a program ID.
Program IDs are numbers from 1 to 255 where the program parameters are stored
internal to the Kurzweil. Program numbers (from 1 to 127 for older units -
from 1 to 999 for the newer Kurzweil units) are what you select from MIDI or
from the keyboard buttons. Program Lists translate MIDI program numbers to
program ID numbers. AS YOU STORE THESE NEW PROGRAMS INTO YOUR KURZWEIL DEVICE,
REMEMBER YOU ARE USING ID NUMBERS. YOU MAY HAVE TO EDIT YOUR PROGRAM LISTS
TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE NEW PROGRAMS. Remember also that certain ID numbers are
reserved for RAM programs ( 64 to 127 in older units, - 255 downward in newer
revision 5 units.) You can copy programs over top of ROM programs with Kurle.
If all of this is still confusing, you should read the Kurzweil manual and the
Kurle manual for more details, then fire up KURLE and play with program lists,
the master table, changing ID numbers, changing program lists etc.

ENJOY!
